Plemmons Medallion

Dr. Art Quickenton, an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, has been a member of the Appalachian faculty for more than 20 years. He was noted for his work with the Greek communities on campus. He has been faculty advisor and chapter advisor for Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. Quickenton also has been a faculty advisor for Appalachians club football team, and Kappa Delta Pi honor society in the Reich College of Education. He is a past recipient Advisor of the Year by Appalachians Center for Student Involvement and Leadership for his work with the fraternity. He also has worked with other fraternities and sororities on campus.

A nominator wrote of Quickenton that, He volunteers to serve students in ways that enrich their out-of-class experiences, and he has made contributions that have significantly enriched the quality of the lives of myriad students.

I enjoy that kind of work, its a part of who I am, said Quickenton. The award is just icing on the cake.

Quickenton also is involved with the universitys alcohol education programs.

He attends statewide alcohol awareness workshops and is a member of the universitys Alcohol and Other Drug Task Force.

Dave Robertson has been the Director of Student Programs at Appalachian for 16 years.

He helped create the Appalachian Popular Programming Society in 1985, which enhances the social environment on campus. The student-run organization brings more than 150 concerts and entertainment programs to campus each year. Robertson also played a major role in the expansion of Plemmons Student Union into a full-service student center, wrote a nominator. His efforts to promote the student union as a learning environment can also be seen in his vision and support of an educational training program that emphasizes learning outcomes and skills development for the more than 100 Plemmons Student Union student employees. Some of the most valuable learning experiences take place outside of the classroom, said Robertson.

Robertson led efforts to transform Appalachians old entertainment venue HAPPYS into the campus nightclub Legends. As chair of the universitys homecoming committee, he has revitalized university traditions such as the pep rally and bonfire. Robertson also has taught Freshman Seminar courses and often is a guest lecturer in Freshman Seminar classes.

Shiona Christensen, a senior advertising and public relations major at Appalachian, has been a member of the W.H. Plemmons Leadership Fellows Program. She served as secretary of the Student Government Association during her sophomore year. She also has worked with the Appalachian Ambassadors program as the new member educator and applications coordinator. This is a huge honor, said Christensen. Ive loved every minute of serving the university. The experience will stay with me forever.

Within the Plemmons Leadership program, Christensen has been student coordinator for two years. She was responsible for the organizations newsletter, and database and records management, and coordinated the Plemmons Advisory Board, the middle school leadership program and mentoring activities. Christensen also has been active in the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership as a projects coordinator with the Multicultural Center, the Trailhead Academy summer leadership experience, and with Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies. She has been a public relations intern for the Mariam C. Hayes School of Music at Appalachian and completed a summer internship at a public relations firm in Nashville, Tennessee.
